On Wednesday 15 February Warren Burt will be talking about the art and the joy of accidental creation.

Burt is a composer, sound poet, theorist, performer, and instrument builder. His work is noisy and energetic, always straddling the boundary between music and language, sound and noise. A current of playfulness flows through Burt’s work, fostering a fearless and ongoing capacity for experimentation and innovation.

Warren’s talk will be around 30 minutes. The forum will then open into a discussion; you'll have a chance to ask questions, and have your own brief rant.

Come and engage; create an ongoing dialogue between people and the ideas that they live and work by. It would be great to have you all there!

Thornbury's own evil genius of analogue noise, Mark Skelton returns in solo guise to present his characteristically fractured take on bruitiste musique concrete improvisation. And, guitar-schredding virtuoso, Theorn Campbell is joined by blast-beating powerhouse, Dan Crowe in a free-grind duo of monumental proportions!

Clan Analogue’s monthly electronic jam session night Gear Shift returns to Horse Bazaar in 2012 with even more bleeps and oscillations. This year the night will be expanded with guest DJs and live acts following each jam session.

Come along on Monday February the 6^th for the first Gear Shift for 2012. The jam starts at 7.30pm followed by a space-age exotica DJ set afterwards from DJ Winduptoy to keep the party going late into the evening. Horse Bazaar is located at 397 Little Lonsdale St in the city.

Anyone is welcome to join in at Gear Shift. Just bring a synth, laptop, drum machine or any kind of electronic music-making gadget. This is a great opportunity to play electronic music with other people, learn some new techniques and try out some different gear.

Ambient music pioneer Robert Rich is touring Australia to support his new album, Medicine Box. Direct from opening the main stage at the Rainbow Serpent Festival Robert Rich will play one gig in Melbourne on Saturday 11th February 2012.

Drawing from decades of recorded work, his concerts blend composition and improvisation in a fluid continuum, creating a hypnotic atmosphere. Rich’s performance will include live electronics with keyboards and computer, along with his signature hand- made flutes and steel guitar.

Saturday afternoon will also feature an exclusive artist talk and Q & A session with Robert as he demonstrates his tour rig and discusses his process and then opens the floor to questions. This is a must not for just fans of Rich but also for musicians to gain insights from one of the world’s ambient pioneers.

Steve Law (Zen Paradox), Melbourne's own electronic music legend, will provide the single support act for the evening, wielding his new analogue modular synth he will provide the perfect introduction to a memorable night of deep music.

The visuals for the evening will be provided by Abre Ojos.

Robert Rich Biography
Across three decades and over three dozen albums, Robert Rich has pushed the boundaries of ambient and electronic music, merging new technology with ethnic and electro-acousic sources, linking old-school spacemusic to gamelan and raga, cyclic minimalism, psychedelia and trance. Rich began building his own analog synthesizers in 1976, when he was 13 years old. He later studied for a year at Stanford’s prestigious CCRMA while earning a degree in psychology and developing tools for lucid dreaming research.
Rich released his first album Sunyata in 1982. Most of his subsequent recordings came out in Europe until 1989. Among these early releases, the 1986 Swedish LP Numena entered early London chill rooms through DJs like Jonah Sharp and Mixmaster Morris. Rich began a string of critically acclaimed releases for Hearts of Space with his best selling album Rainforest (1989). His two collaborations with Steve Roach, Strata (1990) and Soma (1992), laid groundwork for new “tribal” fusions. His collaboration Stalker (1995) with Lustmord became a defining landmark of dark ambient.
Rich has performed in planetariums, cathedrals, caves, art museums and recital halls throughout Europe and North America. His all-night Sleep Concerts, first performed in 1982, became legendary. He has since broadened Sleep Concert audiences with live nocturnal radio broadcasts. In 2001 Rich released the 7 hour DVD Somnium, a studio distillation of the Sleep Concert idea, one of the longest continuous pieces of music ever released on a disc.
Robert Rich has designed sounds for films, including Pitch Black, Crazy Beautiful, Behind Enemy Lines, Dead Girl and others. He has scored documentaries and ads, collaborated with artist Daniel Colvin on the DVD Atlas Dei (2007), and created music for Michael Somoroff’s video installation Illumination (2007). Rich’s sound design has graced preset libraries for Emu, Seer Systems, Camel Audio, WayOutWare, Sony, Big Fish and Izotope. He wrote software for composers who work in just intonation, and helped develop the MIDI microtuning specification. As mastering engineer, he has applied his ear to hundreds of albums in all styles, from classical to noise, pop to hip hop and in-between.

Steve Law/Zen Paradox Biography
Steve Law has been producing electronic music in Australia since the early 1980's. During that time he has gained a reputation as one of Australia's foremost electronic artists.
After exploring many areas of electronic experimentation with the groups Guild of Fire, Foil and various solo projects, Steve formed the techno project Zen Paradox in 1992. The debut album "Eternal Brainwave" was immediately signed to Ollie Olsen's new Psy-Harmonics label, and licensed to KK/Nova Zembla in Europe and Restless in the U.S.. Steve went on to release further material under the Zen Paradox banner during the nineties, backed up with extensive overseas tours. He was named best live electronic act at the 2000 Australian Live Music Awards.
In the meantime, Steve Law continued to explore other areas of cutting edge music, and was awarded the inaugral ABC classic FM computer music award in 1996 for his electro-acoustic composition "Urbania". He has composed music for film, dance and various multi-media works, and has contributed to the Fringe, Next Wave, Experimenta, Electrofringe, Liquid Architecture, Articulating Space, Make it Up Club and Melbourne International Animation festivals amongst others.
Steve has collaborated with many other local and international artists, both live and in the studio, and has continued to release music on various labels around the world. Our final concert for the 2011 season is inspired by a century of Futurist intervention into Western aesthetics. Curated by Kerrie Farnsworth and Shane van den Akker, this week explores the influence of Luigi Rusolo's noise manifesto, “The Art of Noises,” and his intonarumori instruments as manifest in contemporary improvisation and instrument building, both analogue and digital. Exhorting us to open our musical ears to the sounds of the urban and industrial sonosphere, the Futurists anticipated the sonic complexity and abstraction that has become the foundation of modern avant garde improv. Farnsworth and van den Akker have assembled a cast of Melbourne's innovators in this tradition for a series of solo and collaborative noise making. MIUC will return for 2012 on Tuesday, January 17th. Keep safe and listen intently!

Alternate is a project developed through a residency in September 2011 as part of the Today Your Love Program. Inspired by the many dreams they collected during the residency, Jessie and Alice have created an immersive performance through voice and video, which evokes a dream journey and takes the audience across multiple sites in and around West Space.

Alternate draws you into the strange, slippery, liminal space between conscious and unconscious, real and imagined, text and subtext.

Originally released on cassette in 1992, this release differs from Althoff's earlier cassettes in that it is made up of numerous distinct pieces, almost exclusively recorded on 4-track.

Vale John Blades

The Australian experimental music community lost one of its finest last Friday when John Blades passed away due to complications associated with cancer.

John was best known as a founding member of The Loop Orchestra, the long-time host/producer of the Background Noise radio program , and a tireless supporter of experimental musicians and sound artists around the country.

Outside of music, John advocated for people with disabilities (he was diagnosed with MS in 1982) in many ways, most memorably in his Walkley Award-winning radio documentary “The Too Hard Basket” about sexuality and the disabled.

John was one of the rare people I’ve met who I know pretty soon that I am privileged to have crossed paths with. His severe disability could not conceal his keen intelligence and broad knowledge of the arts, his humour, and most of all a positive energy and enthusiasm that he brought to his work. Listen to his fantastic radio doco “The Too Hard Basket” and you’ll get an idea of what I mean. If anyone in this world had something to be down and self-pitying about, it was John, who struggled for years with MS, only to finally succumb to cancer. His last email of a few weeks ago, informing his friends of his grim prognosis, agreed with what we all thought – ‘it wasn’t fair’. Yet he was still warm and positive, holding out hope for a final experimental treatment. We come across so many negative, self-pitying people – none of them have had the trials John did, and yet he was one of the most positive, enthusiastic people I’ve ever known (even though he had had episodes with depression the past; very common for people with MS). His personal and professional support for my own work was significant and lifted my spirits on several occasions.

I saw reports of John’s passing in social media on the weekend, but didn’t want to post anything here until I had something more official. Rik Rue rang me last night and asked that I inform Melbourne people who knew John, and pass on the details of the funeral service (Monday 5 December at Northern Suburbs Crematorium, Sydney). Even if we can’t attend, I’m sure those of us who knew John and/or were moved by his work, will spare a thought for him.

VICMOD is a group of modular synth enthusiasts that meets monthly in Melbourne to build and discuss modular synthesisers. Tonight you’ll hear their ensemble, The VICMOD Ensemble, who recently had a great show at the Melbourne Fringe Festival. VICMOD is also Kyneton based Ross Healy’s record label that features great Australian and International experimental music.

WARREN BURT is one of the major figures in Australian Computer music. Now Daylesford base – this will be his first solo performance for Undue Noise.

ATMOS ENSEMBLE is a Castlemaine/Maldon based free-improv group, led by Simon Howard, using mainly acoustic instruments

JACQUES SODDELL also runs a regional based record label (cajid media) which specialises in Australian sound art. His “cinematic” computer based soundscapes using mutated field recordings & other sounds are well known to Undue Noise audiences. He is also founder of Undue Noise.

THEY EAT SCUM – is a new and constantly evolving line-up of musicians and sound artists from across Victoria. Basing their sound on the concept of ‘free punk’, their improvised sound ranges from solo noise sets and sound art, through to full band psych rock, and noise jams. Stephen Richards (the genius behind the mixing desk at the MIUC every week) performs with his recently scratch-built modular, analogue synthesiser alongside the sublime extended cello practice of Golden Fur's Judy Hamann. US metal and hardcore guitar shredder, Theorn Campbell has convened a trio of abstracted and broken-beat digital grind improv for his debut performance. And, fresh from Berlin-via-the-Goldcoast, the incomparable master of avant-improv plunderphonics, Scott Sinclair, is joined by free-sax-noise firebrand, Lloyd Honeybrook.

What Is Music? is back for its 13th year of existence with two killer nights of avant sounds at the East Brunswick Club and Revolt Melbourne, attempting to hit every frequency in the audible spectrum!

This night will see the debut of a new piece Molecular Music Project Number 1, composed by Melbourne’s favourite drumjunk abuser/sonosphere explorer Sean Baxter for Australia’s leading new music ensembleGolden Fur, which comes with the caveat “culminates in a sustained and uncomfortable refrain in the higher registers”. The mid-range density abuse is supplied by guitar obliterator Marco Fusinato, again with Golden Fur, reviving their far-too-rare, undeniably brilliant collaboration that takes the harshest of electronics and seamlessly adds usually delicate, though hyperamplified, electroacoustic music into a swirling mass of ecstatic controlled chaos. The night concludes with a special extended set from Oren Ambarchi and Joe Talia, more than fulfilling the bass quota for the gig! Ambarchi’s lush abstracted guitar and Talia’s sophisticatedly discriminating drumming are the perfect pairing, droning into the abyss and into the unknown…

Circle Jerk will present handcrafted landscapes, algorithmic art, interactive instruments and visceral progressions. This kaleidoscope of noise will be sculpted behind the veil of 100 loud speakers.

A tangling of electronic music, music concrete, noise, ambience and industrial, on two custom built multi-speaker diffusion systems, will spread throughout the huge industrial arts complex of Revolt Melbourne. The diffusion systems will present listeners with the rare opportunity to experience a dynamic collection of unique, immersive environments, drawn from the minds of selected artists.

The spaces will intertwine with an array of video and performance installations and improvisations, from a motley troupe of Melbourne’s finest contemporary artists.

This pair will be ably replaced by new members MICHAEL WILCZEK (drums - GRONG GRONG) and guitarist TROY NORFOLK (SCOURGE, CHRISTBAIT), who join PETER KENNY - original member since SLUB's conception - sharing vocal duties with near-birth SLUB identity SONKE RICKERTSEN (on guitar also).

Utter: Threshold

Threshold is the latest in a series of evolving audio/visual improvisations by the Melbourne duo Utter. Using discarded office equipment, circuit bent toys and microscopic abstraction, Anthony Magen and John Jacobs transport you to an illuminated dream state via elemental transubstantiation, persistence of vision and the fungibility of vibration. Anthony Magen is a landscape architect, artist and the president of Australian Forum for Acoustic Ecology. John Jacobs is a media designer and electronic poet who produces Radio National’s listening for pleasure program,The Night Air. Their recent performance at Westspace was one of the highlights of the gallery’s A Bunch of Twos series.

Undecisive God: acoustic turntables

Clinton Green’s Undecisive God project has been a mainstay of Australian experimental music since the 1990s. Initially concentrating upon guitars, Green’s current focus is upon prepared turntables as dynamic generators of random sound and percussive patterns. Green is also writer and researcher with an interest in the history of Australian experimental music. His Shame File Music label has released two volumes of the Artefacts of Australian Experimental Music series to critical acclaim.

Paul Fletcher: RiverOceanFog

One time drummer for legendary band Essendon Airport, Bendigo-based Paul now works wonders with animation, built contraptions & sound. Tonight he will produce an ocean of live image and sound experiments and pre-composed audiovisual performance. Permutations and mutations of sound and video footage captured in Central Vic and New Zealand may set out to disprove that a watched pot never boils.

Presented by Undue Noise and Punctum with assistance from Arts Victoria and cajid media.

The venerable David Tolley (a legend of Melbourne improvisation for over 40 years), reconvenes a number of collaborations, including THE OTHER and CONNECTIONS for this week's concert at MIUC. Over two sets, the 10-piece ensemble will perform various combinations from duos to tentets of rarefied “instant composition.” The concert also features the reprise of CONNECTIONS, a trio featuring David with collaborators, Dur-é Dara and Phil Treloar after a 22 year hiatus. This week, a special conduction performance devised by Australian expat, Jasmine Guffond (out from Berlin for some Melbourne Festival action). The piece uses brass and winds to generate other-worldy timbres and frequencies, in a randomised, oscillating, aleatoric improv. Sydney avant voice performer, Tony Osborne returns for a set of extended voice and electronic processing. And Brisbane's Oscill_Ether, with extrapolated electronics, incorporating the traditions of the tabletop and the synth, with contemporary sonic abstractions.

One of the most startling discoveries unearthed by Shame File Music’s landmark 2007 release Artefacts of Australian experimental music: 1930-1973 was undoubtedly the excerpt from Ellitt’s “Journey #1”, dated from the early 1930s. Ellitt’s (pictured here working with tape recorders in 1998) astounding proto-musique concrete work was previously known to only a handful of researchers, but Artefacts awoke a keen interest in this forgotten electronic music pioneer. Sound Constructions collects together all known Ellitt recordings (including the never-before-heard complete version of “Journey #1), spanning a period of 57 years, and integrates the steaming/downloadable tracks into an essay on Ellitt’s work and life written by Artefacts compiler and music historian, Clinton Green. This format is an attempt by Shame File Music to arrive at a new kind of online release that incorporates background information and analysis of the artist and his work to provide some context to Ellitt’s astounding yet little-known music. One saturday morning in August this year the 10 members of Paul Kidney Experience and Slocombe's Pussy combined and converged on The Tote in daylight hours! During this time they recorded through the venue's brand new 24 track digital system.

From a six hour stint 5 tracks have been selected of various length, 40mins in total. Across these tracks the 10-piece band works through a variety of styles - from riff laiden post-stoner thru overdriven rhythmic noise to faux melodic ambience.

This record is as much a surprise to the two bands involved as it will be to you - it's a treat!

It is having a very limited Cd release through Supercriticality Records.

To celebrate the release, Paul Kidney Experience come out to launch it at Irenes Warehouse alongside Slocombe's Pussy this Saturday, with supports from Vodnik, Adam Simmons Vs Brian O'Dwyer and Blankface Distortion. Cd available for the very special price of $5 on the door
